Student worker (SW)
The student employment program was established to help students secure part-time, on- and off-campus employment to earn supplemental income and meet educational expenses.
Types of employment
Students can work in several types of employment programs offered by the ASU Student Employment Office.
- Federal Work-Study Program
- ASU Hourly Employment Program
- Off-Campus Employment Program
Student Employment offers a wide range of positions, which require different degrees of skill or experience. The student wage scale starts at $13.85/hour and pay rates should not exceed $50.00/hour. Four wage levels with different pay ranges have been provided below. Federal Work-Study and Hourly employment share the same wage levels and pay ranges. Wage placement must be in relation to the type of duties performed and in consideration of other student worker wage rates in similar jobs. Please keep in mind that students hired through a waiver must be paid at the Level IV or a Level V. Student workers hired on a level V are paid through a stipend.

III | $15.12 | $18.12 | Duties are technical and complex and involve a high degree of responsibility and judgment. May supervise or direct activities of other student employees. A significant amount of specialized training or experience is required. |
IV | $16.90 | $50.00 | Duties are highly technical and/or complex and involve a significant degree of responsibility and judgment. This classification is limited to teaching/research aide type work or those positions requiring highly specialized skills and/or technical knowledge. |

You also have the option to request a waiver of recruitment, this means instead of opening a hiring requisition for students to apply you can select which particular student you wish to hire and bypass the open search. Waiver hires should only be used when there is a particular student that has the only specific skills and abilities that your position requires. If you are requesting to waiver hire a student please complete the student hiring form that is linked above and the waiver form below, then email both forms to SOLS HR.

Staff
University staff are employed at will. This means that employment with Arizona State University as a university staff employee is not for a specific term and is by mutual consent. Accordingly, either the employee or Arizona State University can terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause, at any time and for any reason except an unlawful one. This relationship is not modified by any ASU policy, any employment practice, or the statement of any ASU supervisor.
If you would like to hire a new staff member please follow the steps below.
- Fill out the Staff hiring form and email it to SOLS HR.
- If you are unsure of what the job title or pay scale should be, please reach out to our department for guidance.
- Keep in mind that the pay range needs to be in accordance with the Market ranges set by ASU.

- If you would like to request a Waiver of Recruitment please fill out the Waiver form as well. Waivers should only be requested if you know of a candidate that has specific skills and abilities that make him/her the best candidate for this position.
- Once our office receives your request we will start the hiring process or request further information if needed.
Processing time for hiring staff members takes up to 4-6 weeks.

Postdoctoral research scholar (Postdoc)
The postdoctoral experience at Arizona State University provides individuals who have recently completed a doctoral degree with a full-time program of advanced academic preparation and research training under the guidance of a supervising faculty mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are by their nature temporary, and are designed primarily to benefit the postdoctoral scholar’s future career development as an independent scientist. Postdoctoral appointments may be funded through salaries, typically from a supervisor’s grant, or through training grant or fellowship stipends.
If you are looking to initiate a postdoctoral research scholar search or waiver of recruitment, please submit your competitive and waiver of recruitment request to a SOLS HR team member once you have finalized the position details, such as the job description and compensation. Our HR team will process your postdoc hiring request.
Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointments in SOLS are issued on a fiscal year basis and may be renewed annually, conditional upon satisfactory job performance, the continued availability of funds, and the needs of the academic unit and the university.
Postdoctoral scholars typically have been awarded a doctoral agree within the past five years, after which time it is expected that they will transition into independent academic or research careers.

Academic professional
Academic professionals include employees designated by the Notice of Appointment as “professional.” Academic professionals, including librarians and researchers, are non-classified employees who are involved with research, academic support, and/or teaching programs, have advanced degrees and/or specialized training, require academic freedom, and report to a person below the level of vice president.
Academic Professional hiring is managed by the SOLS HR team in coordination with the Provost's office, and job searches are posted within our Interfolio Faculty Search system.
If you are looking to initiate an academic professional search or waiver of recruitment, please contact a SOLS HR team member to identify the appropriate rank and title and begin crafting your job description. Please submit your competitive or waiver of recruitment request to a team member once you have finalized the position details.
Academic Professionals are non-classified employees who:
- Are involved with research, academic support, and/or teaching programs.
- Have advanced degrees and/or specialized training.
- Require academic freedom.
- Report to a person below the level of vice president.

Academic Professionals in SOLS are issued fixed-term appointments only. A fixed-term appointment is for a specified period of time as noted below and shall not lead to consideration for continuing appointment. These appointments have no expectation of employment beyond the end of the current appointment period and may be renewed annually, conditional upon satisfactory job performance, the continued availability of funds, and the needs of the academic unit and the university.
